Setting a Global (Default) Redirect
The global redirect is the foundation of ThankRedirect. It sets a default destination for every order, so any customer who places an order and doesn’t match a more specific rule will land on this page. Setting it up takes about 30 seconds.
What Is the Global Redirect?
Think of the global redirect as your catch-all rule. If you only set one thing in ThankRedirect, this is it. Every time a customer completes checkout, ThankRedirect checks its rules in order. If no more specific rule matches, like a product rule or category rule, the global redirect kicks in.
This means you can have different pages for different products, but still guarantee that every order ends up somewhere intentional rather than the default WooCommerce page.
Setting Up the Global Redirect
- Go to ThankRedirect in your WordPress admin sidebar
- Find the Global Redirect section (it’s typically the first section you see)
- Choose your redirect type:
Option 1: Redirect to a WordPress Page
Select Page and use the dropdown to search for and choose any page on your site.
This is the best option when your custom Thank You page is built inside WordPress. ThankRedirect will automatically add the order ID and key to the URL, so any shortcodes on that page will show live order data.
Option 2: Redirect to a Custom URL
Select Custom URL and type or paste your destination URL.
Use this for:
- External landing pages or funnel tools (ClickFunnels, Leadpages, etc.)
- Subdomains (e.g.,
https://members.yourstore.com/welcome) - Any URL that isn’t a standard WordPress page
The plugin will still append ?order_id=XXX&key=XXX to your custom URL so shortcodes can work there too.
Saving Your Settings
Click Save after making your selection. A confirmation message will appear when your settings have been saved successfully.
Testing the Global Redirect
To confirm it’s working:
- Place a test order on your store (use a free product or a payment gateway in sandbox/test mode)
- Complete checkout
- You should land on the page or URL you configured instead of the default WooCommerce Thank You page
When Does the Global Redirect NOT Fire?
The global redirect is skipped when a more specific rule matches the order. The full priority order is:
- Product variation redirect (Pro)
- Product type redirect (Pro)
- Product tag redirect (Pro)
- Product brand redirect (Pro)
- Payment method redirect (Pro)
- User role redirect (Pro)
- Product redirect
- Category redirect
- Global redirect ← this fires last
See How Redirect Priority Works for a full explanation of the priority order.
Pro tip: Even if you plan to set up product-specific redirects, always configure the global redirect first. It’s your safety net: any order that doesn’t match a specific rule will use it.
