Can Guest Customers Be Redirected?
Yes — ThankRedirect works for both logged-in customers and guest customers. Most redirect rules apply regardless of whether the customer has a WordPress account.
What Works for Guests
All of these redirect rule types work for guest orders:
- Global redirect
- Product redirect
- Category redirect
- Product variation redirect *(Pro)*
- Product type redirect *(Pro)*
- Product tag redirect *(Pro)*
- Product brand redirect *(Pro)*
- Payment method redirect *(Pro)*
ThankRedirect checks the order contents and payment method to determine the redirect — not whether the customer is logged in. So guests get redirected just as reliably as registered customers.
What Doesn’t Work for Guests
One rule type that does not apply to guest orders is the User Role Redirect (Pro). User role redirects require the customer to have a WordPress user account and a specific role assigned to it. Guests have no user account, so there’s no role to check.
For guest orders, ThankRedirect will skip the user role rule and continue down the priority list to the next matching rule.
Shortcodes and Guest Orders
ThankRedirect shortcodes work for guest orders too. The shortcodes rely on the order_id and key in the URL — not on whether the customer is logged in. As long as the order key is valid, shortcodes will display the correct order data for both guests and registered customers.
WooCommerce Guest Checkout Setting
Make sure guest checkout is enabled in WooCommerce if you accept guest orders:
- Go to WooCommerce → Settings → Accounts & Privacy
- Check that “Allow customers to place orders without an account” is enabled
Pro tip: If you want to treat guest customers differently from registered customers post-purchase, consider using a checkout flow plugin that captures their email and optionally creates a WordPress account during checkout. Once they have an account, they become eligible for user role-based redirect rules.
