Quick Start: Your First Redirect
Setting up your first redirect with ThankRedirect takes less than five minutes. This guide walks you through setting up a global redirect, the default destination for all orders, so every customer lands on your custom page after checkout.
Step 1: Go to ThankRedirect Settings
In your WordPress admin, click ThankRedirect in the left sidebar. This opens the main settings panel.
Step 2: Find the Global Redirect Setting
The Global Redirect is the default rule that applies to all orders. It’s the foundation — every order that doesn’t match a more specific rule will use this setting.
You’ll see two options for where to redirect:
- WordPress Page: Choose any page from your site using a dropdown
- Custom URL: Enter any full URL (including external websites)
Step 3: Choose Your Redirect Destination
Option A: Redirect to a WordPress Page
- Select WordPress Page
- Click the dropdown and search for or select the page you want customers to land on
This is the recommended option if your custom Thank You page is built in WordPress. The plugin will automatically append the order details to the URL so your shortcodes can display live order data.
Option B: Redirect to a Custom URL
- Select Custom URL
- Type or paste the full URL — for example:
https://yourstore.com/thank-you
Use this if you’re redirecting to an external landing page, a funnel page builder URL, or any address that isn’t a standard WordPress page.
Step 4: Save Your Settings
Click the Save button. Your settings are saved instantly.
Step 5: Test Your Redirect
Place a test order on your store to confirm the redirect is working:
- Add any product to your cart
- Go through checkout and complete the order (use a free or zero-value product, or a payment gateway in test mode)
- After the order is placed, you should be automatically taken to the page you configured
If the redirect works, you’re all set! If it doesn’t, see the troubleshooting guide: Why is my redirect not working?
What Happens to the Order Confirmation?
When ThankRedirect sends a customer to your custom page, it always includes the order ID and order key in the URL as query parameters. This means:
- ThankRedirect shortcodes (like
[wpkin_order_number]) will still display live order data on your page - The customer still receives their WooCommerce order confirmation email as normal
- Order data is still stored and visible in your WooCommerce admin
The redirect simply replaces the default WooCommerce “Thank You” page — everything else about the order flow stays exactly the same.
Next Steps
Now that your global redirect is working, you can:
- Set up product-specific or category-specific redirects for more targeted experiences
- Add shortcodes to your custom Thank You page to display order details
- Install a pre-built page template to save time designing your page
Pro tip: Create a dedicated “Thank You” page in WordPress before setting up your redirect. Give it a clean URL like /thank-you/ and build it out with your branding, a personalised message, and any upsell content you want to show.
