Does ThankRedirect Work with Subscription Products?
ThankRedirect works with WooCommerce Subscriptions for the initial purchase — the first time a customer checks out and subscribes. Here’s what to expect for initial orders vs. renewal orders.
Initial Subscription Purchase
When a customer buys a subscription for the first time, they go through the standard WooCommerce checkout flow. ThankRedirect hooks into this flow and redirects them to your custom page — exactly the same as a regular product purchase.
You can target subscription products with any of the standard redirect rules:
- Set a product redirect rule for the subscription product itself
- Add the subscription product to a specific product category and use a category redirect
- Use the global redirect as a catch-all
Subscription Renewals
Renewal orders for subscriptions are processed automatically in the background — they don’t go through the standard checkout flow. Because ThankRedirect hooks into the woocommerce_thankyou action (which only fires during a customer-facing checkout), it does not fire for automatic renewal orders.
This is expected behaviour. Renewal orders don’t have a Thank You page — they’re processed silently. ThankRedirect only applies to customer-initiated checkouts.
Subscription-Specific Welcome Pages
For subscription products, the most valuable use case is the initial purchase redirect — sending new subscribers directly to:
- An onboarding or welcome page
- A membership area login or setup page
- A video explaining what to do next
- A booking calendar (for coaching or service subscriptions)
If you have multiple subscription tiers (e.g., Basic, Professional, Enterprise), use Product Variation Redirects (Pro) to send each tier to a different onboarding experience.
Compatibility
ThankRedirect has been tested for compatibility with:
- WooCommerce Subscriptions — the official WooCommerce extension
- YITH WooCommerce Subscriptions
- Subscriptio
If you use a subscription plugin not listed here and experience issues with the initial redirect, contact support with details of your subscription plugin and its version.
Pro tip: Pairing the initial subscription redirect with a personalised onboarding page (using shortcodes to greet the customer by name and confirm their subscription details) significantly improves new subscriber experience and reduces early cancellations.
